Through collaboration with schools, private businesses, and community organizations; with parents and guardians, local governments, and school districts as well as other community stakeholders, YLP can be a catalyst for improving the literacy rates among children and young adults throughout the northwest regions. And with our Financial Literacy Model we can have future economic impact.
Awareness Campaign (cont’d)
A stepping-stone to achieving our purpose is the Book Drives in which we collect books (both new and recycled) from members of the community. The community is made aware of the need for the books through a public outreach campaign including, paid for television commercials, social media campaigns, printed publications, public service announcements and of course word of mouth.
The implementation of the Awareness Campaign and Book Drives are strategic and take place during seasons when they offer the best chance of success such as mid to late spring or during the fall.
The financing of the campaign is through the contribution of YLP’s private partners who provide funding for the TV spots and gain the public relations benefit as well as the positive engagement of its workforce. In addition to the public relations benefits there are other practical aspects, such as the long-term benefits of improving the prospects for a literate workforce.
Working together with private partners is extremely beneficial to the YLP. For example, in working with a local restaurant that has several locations throughout the area, we ran TV commercials to “call the public to action” by visiting the restaurant and dropping off books in support of the Book Drive. This is an obvious benefit to both the restaurant and the Book Drive as we attract more customers to the business because of the interest in the campaign.
Annual Campaigns geared towards emphasizing the need for early reinforcement of reading skills while the child can be influenced
This bi-annual effort is intended to bring books to a variety of locations in our community so that the supply can meet the demand for them.
Individuals willing to contribute 4 hours per month to reading with a child or teaching a child basic financial skill (i.e., counting money, learning saving, spending, and investing basics, etc.).
Our learners have achieved remarkable success through our programs. They have gained employment, started their own businesses, and improved their communication skills. We are proud of their accomplishments and grateful for the opportunity to contribute to their success.
This is a commitment to provide a book or read a book to a child by each adult in our network.
Public or private partners will cooperate with the local school system for input on programs that impact productivity skills.
"Project 200" will be an organized Mentoring action to reach up to 200 at-risk students who are failing in their reading skills.
